About the Song
For this inaugural music clip, Gretta provided a list of quotes she had facilitated from The Realm Of Beings with the single instruction to “choose one.” Given carte blanche beyond that, the quote “Overflow your life with joy as you honor your magnificence” immediately jumped off the page. Moments later, the bassline to Dr. Abingdon’s arrangement of “The Storm is Passing Over” entered my ear, along with the melody. To give impact to the quote, I envisioned multiple key changes—a common gospel music device—buttressed by stacked harmonies that subtly grew in complexity with each iteration, to really drive home the message. A drop down to the original key and a return to unison voices near the conclusion provide a musical tapering-off and a “bookend” to the beginning of the clip.
About the Making of the Clip
Based in Chicago, I am surrounded by talented, dedicated, professional musicians who are committed to every project they undertake. In this case, I knew that the music “would take care of itself.” To me, the real magic that you see and hear comes from the in-between-the-notes stuff—endless opportunities for creative forces to combine in multiple ways! Favorite moments include pianist and dear friend Ryan Cohan’s meticulous assessment and commentary on my arrangement before we went into the studio helped me to be a confident, effective bandleader. Drummer Chuck Lacy’s childlike enthusiasm at being tasked to clap the slate for the video component was absolutely contagious! Perhaps electric bassist Bear Williams sums it up best, with his joyful “yaaaaaay”! at the end of a particularly good take, documented after the credits panel near the end of the video.
Speaking of video, Jordan Penelle did an amazing job of capturing key moments through his lens. Brennan Mitrolka’s engineering skills ensured an accurate reflection of the music as it was intended to be conveyed in the final product.
